Ouiji boards

Ouiji boards (Ouija) were originally sold as a parlor game. The ouiji board first appeared in the 1890s and was inspired from talking boards. The Ouiji board use is to make contact from the spiritual realm. The Ouigi board lists each individual letter of the alphabet, numbers 0-9, yes, no, maybe, and good-bye. A device of divination called a planchette is used to spell out the message being sent from the outer world.

There has been much debate on the validity of the use of an ouiji board. By virtue of it’s being, it was created as a parlor game for guests to play with the notion of contacting the spirit world. And, that use has been validated as a form of entertainment. Guests arrive, sit down at the board, and ask it a question. They then place their fingertips on the edges of the planchette and it will begin to move across the board spelling out the answers to the questions. It has been argued that the answers will be the result of the individual’s conscious mind or sub conscious mind. The answer will be the one they want to know instead of the unbiased truth.

Before the popularity of the ouiji board, talking boards were a serious form of communicating with the spirit world. Psychics used them instead of séances or psychic readings and they were legitimate tools in the psychic trade. Talking boards were usually homemade, had numbers and letters on them like the ouiji board. They used an indicator, which was usually a piece of wood perched on some type of legs. Ouiji boards were developed from talking boards. Talking boards were popular because they could be used in the home and kept hidden from non-believers.

The ouiji board has been linked to evil practices and associations with the occult. Folklore says that if the ouiji board is placed under the bed the portal to the underworld will be opened and all sorts of demonic spirits will filter through. This has yet to be proven, but it is an alluring selling feature of the game.

By putting the ouiji board into mainstream culture the validity of it being used as a serious tool for divination became tarnished. While it is true the non-serious player of the board game would get the results they sought. The Ouija board used in that setting is a toy. But, when a serious consultation is requested the ouiji board is no different than the talking boards that inspired their making.

The individual asks a question, opens their mind and surrenders their will to the answer the spirit world will divine. This is the same type of mindset used in séance, tarot or spiritual readings. The results received will be the same. Whether ouiji board is used for entertainment purposes or a serious consultation with the spirit realm is up to the user, but the ouiji board should be taken as a serious psychic tool if the intention is to use it that way.
