Soothsayers
January 13, 2009

Soothsayers are individuals that predict the future. The term has been used since biblical times and is associated with the prophets. Their ability to predict future events lends themselves to be called soothsayer. While the term is antiquated, it refers to any of the psychic specialties, clairvoyance, tarot card readers, or fortunetellers.
The limitation of a soothsayer is that they predict the future and opposed to psychic specialties that use messages from the dead or past life messages. Though messages from the dead may predict future events and in this instance, the psychic would be considered a soothsayer.
The soothsayer receives their information from the spiritual realm then they translate its meaning to foretell what will happen. If an individual is having a psychic reading, the psychic will gather the message then direct the individual how to respond to the future action. For example, if the question was posed, should I go to college? The answer is no, since in the future the individual will be needed at home.
The reputation of a soothsayer is limited to the time period in which they made their predictions. Nostradamus and Edgar Cayce have achieved notoriety with their soothsaying, while others have not.
In ancient Rome a daily consult with the soothsayer was done before the emperor would venture outside his door. The soothsayer would consult whatever divination tool they used (astrology was popular) and determine if future events were conducive for the emperor to make a public appearance, invite visitors into their domicile or conduct governmental meetings. The soothsayer of ancient Rome held tremendous political power.
In Ancient Greece soothsayers would orate long volumns of predictions that later became known as oracles. The term became synonymous with an individual who speaks wisdom of the future. These soothsayers were highly regarded and respected members of the community.
Soothsayers in Renaissance England were considered practitioners of evil and they consorted with the devil. The ability to predict an event that came true could only be construed outside the realm of established religion and therefore, it was the work of the devil. Soothsayers were persecuted as witches and received the same end.
Soothsayers have also been labeled as doomsday predictors. This is a true comparison. Doomsday predictors foretell of future catastrophic events that result in the destruction of the universe. The terms are interchangeable.
In form, there are examples of soothsayers across most cultures. The shaman, healer, voodoo priest/priestess, and Native American medicine man, while they have other duties associated with their title, they all have the ability to predict future events. This ability also makes them a soothsayer in that instance.
Contemporary soothsayers follow the tradition of soothsaying, but instead of predicting individual influences, they predict global influences. They predict political winnings, great floods, great wars, spiritual messages to follow and other claims to future events. Religious soothsayers predict Armageddon and the appearance of the antichrist and the second coming of Christ. Whether they call themselves oracles, psychics, or soothsayers their ability to claim specific events based on a supernatural knowledge is the same.
